I do not think "ly" adverbs are as bad as certain subsets of the fiction writing world believe them to be. They can be useful in creating voice, as real people do not speak in grammatically perfect sentences and so adverbs will leak in if you are writing genuine people. That this is the first thing I decided to put should say a lot about me; I love grammar and want to teach it at the collegiate level.

I live next to a house full of men who ride Kawasaki motorcycles full speed down the road at all hours of the night; their presence is a comfort to me. I have gotten used to the mortar shelling. My pit bull has not, and is afraid of it and also thunder storms.
